India?!

I had a good day yesterday at...the school. (I hope there isn't a school called....a school - I'd have to change my blog address again)

I was teaching Year 1s (Grade 2) - bless them. I think I could actually handle Year 1s. I volunteered in a Grade 2 class about 5 years ago when I was working 1:1 with a student in the class. They are at a good age, because:
- they are still cute
- independence is new and exciting for them
- they still cry when their mommies and daddies drop them off, so you have to gently take them by the hand and bribe...I mean reassure them of all the FUN you are going to have.
- they have NO idea what geography means
- school is still FUN and exciting
- you can get their attention by simply clapping your hands
- they can make a morning feel like an entire day - but its an absolutely fantastic time to spend with them

Funny story of the morning though - when I was doing the register (attendance), I asked if they knew where my "accent" was from - these are the replies I got:
- "Another school! What school are you from Miss?"
- "Ya, what school did you come from?"
- "You sound like me, and I'm American"

So once I got them thinking about countries, and not schools...these are the answers I got after saying I was from the country above America:
- "Australia, Miss?"
- "India!"

Have never gotten India before, but solid guess.

I went to see The Social Network last night - and there is an Oxford connection! 2 of the students who sued Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg, for stealing their idea, rowed for Harvard and competed in the Henley Regatta (about 20 minutes from Oxford) so they showed Henley in the movie (cool to see after actually being there). The 2 students, who have since represented U.S.A in the Olympics, are now studying at Christ Church in Oxford and live near me - crazy...don't worry, I'm not stalking, just like to do my research after seeing movies is all.

I have been searching, since I got here, for a recreation league to get involved with - either as a volunteer, coach or to play. I have come across some very strange sports - nothing I have heard of before - Korfball, Kettleball, Netball, etc. I finally came across a basketball social league that meets every Thursday for a couple of hours. I am going to check that out tonight.

Oh ya! Also thought I should share that the average temperatures this week have been around 12-14 degrees, Celsius! :-)

Much love! xo
